When San held a knife to his neck and professed she'd gladly die to kill Eboshi, Ashitaka whispered, "No. Ashitaka interprets the Forest Spirit's last message of the film to echo one of the very first things he begged of San. Ashitaka and San represent two different worlds, and a hopeful note for them is a hopeful note for nature and humanity working together. To say that their romance is dead in the water because the film doesn't end with a Disney-style wedding is an obtuse disservice to the entire message of the film. There's much that needs to be done, but that's the beauty of the film.Īshitaka and San symbolize a great hope: that it is possible to meet in the middle, that union between man and nature is possible, and that hatred can be overcome and replaced with symbiosis. Irontown needs a new framework, and that's where Ashitaka comes in. That dose of reality is important because it would be irresponsible for Ashitaka to just leave without trying to help shape the town into something sustainable and functional rather than exploitive. Ashitaka promises that he will see San again, but he does need to help reconstruct Irontown. While it is true that San and Ashitaka don't ride off together into the sunset, it's important to remember that they are still young.
